Business Loans
Business loans can help established businesses grow when used responsibly.
When Business Funding May Be Appropriate
- Fulfilling Orders: If you have purchase orders and need capital to fulfill them, then short-term financing can bridge the gap between production costs and payment. The return is nearly guaranteed.
- Proven Demand: If your business is profitable and you have sustained demand more than you can serve, then financing to expand capacity makes sense.
- Seasonal Inventory: Businesses with predictable seasonal cycles may benefit from short-term financing to stock inventory before peak periods.
When Business Funding Is NOT a Good Idea
- Launching an Untested Idea: Do not borrow money to start a business you have not yet validated. Test your concept with minimal investment first. Get customers before you get funding.
- Covering Operating Losses: If your business is losing money, borrowing will not fix it. You will simply owe more money while the underlying problems continue. Fix the business model first.
- Borrowing on Projections: Optimism is not a business plan. Funding based on projections without evidence of demand often leads to debt with nothing to show for it.
The Most Common Mistake
Many aspiring business owners believe money is what stands between them and success. This is almost always backwards. Successful businesses figure out how to make money before they borrow. They start small, test their assumptions, find customers, and prove the model works. Then they use funding to scale what is already working. If you cannot make your business work on a small scale without funding, borrowing money to do it bigger will usually just create bigger losses.
Before You Seek Business Funding
- Have you sold your product or service to real customers?
- Do you know your actual costs, not estimates?
- Can you clearly explain how the funding will generate returns that exceed its cost?
If you cannot answer yes to these questions, you are not ready for funding. You are ready for more research, more testing, and more validation.
